Few users reported they can't lower the gain and it's hitting 0db and clipping.
I use a Taiwanese made 1530 datasette for adjusting the adapter.There are so many other makes and clones out there and some of them might be outputting too much.
Clipping is not a big issue for backing up data tapes as Audiotap and Finaltap take care of it.

You need to adjust the mic gain to keep the line noise down,signal over 0fb.
